Google Reader SendTo-Plugin

Google Reader has added a new feature to the Reader-Frontend: the “SendTo-Button”. This button allows you to send the link of the current article to different social services like Twitter, Digg and so on. It is also possible to define your own targets for the SendTo.

We have created a small Joomla!-Plugin to handle this SendTo-Target and store the link in the Joomla!-Weblinks.

 plugin_parameter

Parameter

  • Default Category
When there is no URL-Parameter cat_id, this is the weblinks-category, where the link is stored
  • Security-Code
Enter a string of characters and numbers. You have to add this string as a parameter to the GReader-URL, so you make sure that the call is authorized. Without this code, the plugin does nothing.
  • Autopublish Weblink
Decide if the weblink shall be published automatically
  • Open in...
Set how the weblink shall be opened
  • Don’t forget to activate the plugin

GReader SendTo Configuration

  • Click “Settings” in the Google Reader
  • Click Tab SendTo
  • Click Button "Create Custom Link"
  • Enter the name for your custom link
  • Enter the link to your site. Please use the following format:
    http://www.yourdomain.com/index.php?handle=greader&sec_code=abcd12345&title=${title}&source=${source}&url=${url}
You can add the parameter “cat_id” (e.g. &cat_id=37) to overwrite the predefined category.
  • Add the link to the favicon of your site:
    http://www.yourdomain.com/templates/yourtemplate/favicon.ico
  • Save the settings
  • Go back to the feed view of Google Reader
  • You should see the custom link now in the SendTo-dropdown.

If you use the SendTo-Feature with your custom link now, your website should open in a new window and an information about the successful operation should be visible. If not, please check the errormessage.

You can see the result of this plugin on our homepage or the “Interesting Links”. The module “What we found on the Web” shows the links that we add through this plugin.

This is a very simple plugin at the moment, but it does what it has to – maybe we will add some more features in the future.
